NIGHT CREAMS AND TREATMENTS

Night treatment creams are normally extra-intensive treatment products designed to help hydrate and condition skin during the night—when normal tissue repair is taking place all over the body, including the skin. Night treatments are often heavier in consistency and texture than day products. They normally contain more emollient than day cream and are not made for use under makeup. Night creams should be applied all over the skin, according to manufacturer’s instructions. It is important that the skin be thoroughly cleansed before applying night treatment.

Night Treatment Fluid for Oily–Combination, Dehydrated  Skin

Client and Skin Type This fluid is made to hydrate adult oily skin that is also dehydrated. It can be used on oily and combination skin. These clients are normally adults who need to use a hydrating agent but develop clogged pores and break out easily. This fl uid has been laboratory tested and found to be noncomedogenic. It is also ideal for the client who prefers a lighter-weight night treatment.

Product Characteristics Due to its low emollient content, this fl uid is very light in texture and feel. It does not feel oily at all because it contains mostly humectants to attract water to the skin, rather than oils and fats that will clog this type of skin. This fl uid comes in a tube and should be applied in moderate amounts to the entire skin before bedtime.

Chemical Action and Design This fl uid contains sodium PCA, a natural moisturizing factor (NMF), and glycerin as hydrating agents. It also includes allantoin, retinyl palmitate, and tocopherol for their conditioning properties. This fl uid has been carefully designed without comedogenic ingredients (see Chapter 16, Comedogenicity) to avoid clogging the oily and combination skin for which it is intended. The emollients added are tridecyl stearate, tridecyl trimellitate, and neopentylglycol dicaprate/dicaprylate, specifi cally chosen because they are noncomedogenic. This fl uid adds hydration to the skin without adding excess emollients that cause buildup of cells, which in turn causes clogs to form.

Night Treatment for Oily, Clogged Adult Skin

Client and Skin Type This product is designed for oily skin or oily, clogged areas. It is for clients who have a tendency to break out but fi nd that most drying agents overdry. Adult acne can benefi t from this type of product because it incorporates a peeling agent and a hydrating agent as well as a protectant. This product is also ideal for an adult client with oily skin, who has been using heavy moisturizers that are clogging the skin. It feels like a moisturizer but is actually a very light peeling agent.

Product Characteristics This lightweight product has an unusual texture, somewhere between a gel and a cream. It is very light and dries quickly when applied. It has a matte dry feeling when used. It should be applied in the evening after cleansing and toning. It takes the place of moisturizer and can be used under makeup or alone.

Chemical Action and Design Salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid, is used in a very small quantity in this product to promote some exfoliation. This product contains glycerin and propylene glycol as humectants, and dimethicone provides protection against excess water loss.

Night Hydrating Cream for Combination Mature Skin

Client and Skin Type Designed for older oily and combination skins that need hydration but do not need extra oils, this lightweight cream is good for mature clients who still have a tendency to break out. It provides hydration without oiliness. This cream could also be used as a night treatment for younger, extradehydrated skin types. The cream has been laboratory tested and determined to be noncomedogenic.

Product Characteristics The cream is extremely lightweight and is absorbed by the skin easily. After use, the skin feels smooth and “plumped up.” It is contained in a tube and should be applied to clean skin before bedtime. It contains no color or fragrance, which is helpful for sensitive and allergy-prone skin.

Chemical Action and Design A mixture of lipids, including fatty acids, sphingolipids, phospholipids, and cholesterol, helps reinforce the barrier function of the mature combination skin. Hydrating agents include sodium hyaluronate, glycerin, and butylene glycol. Protective emollients that help prevent dehydration include caprylic/capric triglycerides and dimethicone.

Night Moisturizing Lotion for Dehydrated Combination Dry Skin

Client and Skin Type This lotion is formulated to help skin that is both oil-dry and water-dry. This type of skin has a very narrow T-zone with little oil production or visible pore structure. Clients are typically mature women.

Product Characteristics This treatment is a lotion, packaged in a bottle. It is slightly oily to the touch and leaves a slight fi lm on the skin surface. This characteristic is helpful for drier skin types. It is a light blue color, due to its azulene content. It should be applied before bedtime.

Chemical Action and Design The lotion contains a mixture of oils, emollients, and humectants that provide both hydration and oils for the oil-dry skin. It contains the humectants urea, propylene glycol, and butylene glycol and is mixed with sesame oil, peanut oil, and various emollient esters and fats. Because it contains a good amount of both hydrator and oils, it contains sodium lauryl sulfate, used as an emulsifi er to keep the oils in the water-based emulsion. Sodium lauryl sulfate is rarely used as an emulsifi er in modern formulations, indicating that this is likely an older formula.

Night Cream for Dry, Dehydrated Skin

Client and Skin Type Alipidic (oil-dry), dehydrated, mature skin is the target for this heavier cream. This type of client is very dry for most of the year and needs a richer cream.

Product Characteristics This cream comes in a jar. It is rich in texture, leaves an emollient residue on the skin when applied, and stays on the skin all night. The product is fragrance-free.

Chemical Action and Design This cream is a mixture of humectants and a large amount of emollients. The chief humectant in this cream is sorbitol. Emollients include caprylic/capric triglycerides, jojoba oil, and squalane, which help prevent moisture loss. It is fragrance-free and has been tested to be noncomedogenic, although it is intended for skin that does not tend to develop comedones.

Firming Night Cream for Mature Skin with Lack of Elasticity

Client and Skin Type This night cream is for clients with combination to dry, dehydrated, sun-damaged skin that needs more elasticity.

Product Characteristics This cream comes in a jar. It has a fl uffy, light texture and absorbs easily. It has no color or fragrance; these are helpful features for sensitive skin. The product has been tested for irritancy potential and comedogenicity.

Chemical Action and Design This high-tech cream is a mixture of humectants and emollients with a complex of botanical performance ingredients, hydrocotyl and conefl ower extracts, that are helpful in improving the appearance of skin with poor elasticity. The chief humectants in this cream are sodium hyaluronate, glycerin, and butylene glycol as well as protective cyclomethicone, a silicone derivative, which helps prevent moisture loss.

Acetyl Hexapeptide Cream for Wrinkled Skin

Client and Skin Type This product is for clients with combination to dry, sundamaged skin with many wrinkles, especially expression lines.

Product Characteristics This cream has a richer feel because of its emollient content and is designed for a drier skin type. The product comes in a jar. It also contains hydrators, so it can be used as a general moisturizer as well as a wrinkle treatment. It is used all over the face and can be used on a wrinkled neck as well. The product has been tested for irritancy potential and comedogenicity.

Chemical Action and Design Acetyl hexapeptide-8 (also known as Argireline®) is the featured performance ingredient in this cream. Acetyl hexapeptide-8 helps relax the appearance of wrinkles and is especially effective for facial expression lines. Emollients caprylic/capric triglycerides and sunfl ower oil help make this product helpful for alipidic, dry older skin. Hydrators help plump the surface cells with moisture, making the skin texture smoother. Regular use of this cream, along with a good alpha hydroxy serum, will help the skin look much less wrinkled and younger.
